Why the City Is Called Blue Springs
Travelers moving west stopped near a spring of the Little Blue River. The water supply and demand for provisions led to a grist mill and settlement at what is now Burrus Old Mill Park. The city's name comes from those springs. Source: City of Blue Springs history.
In 1878, the railroad planned a station about a mile east of the original settlement. The town's center shifted toward it. Blue Springs incorporated in 1880. This explains why the original spring site and today's downtown aren't the same stop. Source: city history.
The city's history identifies Franklin Smith's 1845 post office as another step in making Blue Springs a permanent community. Water first drew travelers to the spring site; the later railroad pulled trade toward a new center. A visit to Burrus Old Mill Park and downtown therefore shows two stages of the town's development. Parks and Water Activities
Burrus Old Mill Park
This 14-acre city park stands at the original settlement site. The spring associated with the city's name lies south of the park, across Walnut Street. The park also has a splash pad, bringing a seasonal play activity to a place with local historical meaning. Source: Burrus Old Mill Park.
Choose Burrus for a city-park visit connected to Blue Springs' beginnings. Check splash-pad operating information before planning around water play.
Blue Springs Lake and Beach
Blue Springs Lake is part of Fleming Park and has 720 acres of water. It's a separate destination from Burrus Old Mill Park. The county lists the beach at 1500 NE Bowlin Road with a Lee's Summit address, so use the beach's exact address rather than navigating only to Blue Springs. The beach season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Check the county's beach status before leaving; a seasonal schedule doesn't guarantee swimming access on every day. Choose the lake beach for swimming, rather than treating the city's splash pad as the same type of activity. Source: Jackson County beach seasons.
Fall Fun Festival
Blue Springs' annual Fall Fun Festival brings vendors, live music, a parade and carnival activities to downtown Main Street. Plan around the parade if that's your priority, or use the entertainment schedule for a music-focused visit. Source: festival organizer.
The festival is a fall tradition. Exact dates, entry rules and parking arrangements come from the organizer's schedule and map, rather than a previous year's listing.
Spring: The city's annual Easter Egg-stravaganza offers a family event before the summer swimming season. Summer: The annual Independence Day celebration adds fireworks to the community calendar. Check the city's program for each year's locations and access details. Sources: annual spring event and city Independence Day tradition.
