A County Seat and River Landing
Liberty became the Clay County seat in 1822 and incorporated in 1829. During the 1830s, nearby Liberty Landing received steamboats carrying people and goods along the Missouri River. The landing linked the town to wider trade and westward travel. Source: City of Liberty history.
William Jewell College was founded in 1849. The city also preserves the story of the Clay County Savings Bank robbery in 1866, which it attributes to the James-Younger Gang with the qualification that the connection is alleged. These subjects reflect different parts of Liberty's history, from education to crime. Source: city history.

Jesse James Bank Museum
The museum occupies the bank building on the historic square associated with the 1866 robbery. Choose it for a focused visit about that event and its setting. Sources: Missouri tourism museum guide and city history.
Clay County Museum and Walking Routes
The Clay County Museum offers rotating displays of county artifacts. It's a broader history choice than the bank museum. Liberty also provides historic walking routes, including African American history and neighborhood tours. Choose a route by subject rather than expecting one walk to cover every part of the city's past. Sources: Liberty museum guide and city walking-tour resources.
An Outdoor Alternative
Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary protects native habitats and provides nature education. Choose it when you want an outdoor visit rather than a museum-focused outing. Check the sanctuary's own visitor rules and hours, because its access arrangements differ from an ordinary city park. Sources: sanctuary and visitor information.
The sanctuary doesn't charge an entry fee for the grounds or nature center, but asks for a donation. Pets aren't allowed. The nature center has a shorter seasonal calendar than the trails, so a walk doesn't guarantee access to indoor exhibits or restrooms. Sanctuary fees and seasonal access.
Choose the square's museums for indoor history or the sanctuary for a pet-free nature outing. For a birthday or other group event, the sanctuary offers room and picnic-shelter rentals rather than treating the whole site as an unreserved gathering space. Sanctuary rentals.
Liberty Fall Festival
The annual Liberty Fall Festival fills historic downtown each September with vendors, food, entertainment and carnival rides. An ordinary square visit and a festival visit involve different access and parking arrangements. Start with the organizer's information if the festival is the reason for your trip. Summer: The Liberty Summer Band gives free public concerts on selected summer evenings. The city lists its program and announces weather-related venue changes, so check the concert location before heading out. Source: Liberty Summer Band.
