Rural Roots and a Later City
Gladstone incorporated in 1952. The surviving Atkins-Johnson Farm shows a much older chapter of life in this part of Clay County. Jonathan Atkins bought the property in 1834 and expanded the house in 1853. The Johnson family acquired it in 1920. Sources: city history in its comprehensive plan and farm's historical timeline.
The city acquired the house and part of the property in 2005 to preserve it. The museum opened to the public in 2013. Today's visits connect the farmhouse with local records, objects and the landscape that supported farm life. Source: farm preservation history.
Plan a Farm and Museum Visit
General museum admission and parking are free. Guided field trips and some special events cost extra. Check the published season before going; the farmhouse doesn't operate on a year-round daily schedule. Source: museum visitor information.
A heritage garden grows vegetables, herbs and flowers with help from Master Gardeners. Choose the garden for outdoor learning or the museum for local artifacts and changing exhibits. What you see growing depends on the season. Sources: heritage garden and museum exhibits.
Big Shoal Cemetery
The nearby cemetery offers a free self-guided visit from dawn to dusk throughout the year. A walking-tour brochure explains the people buried there. It's a separate outdoor option when the museum isn't open. Source: cemetery visitor information.
Accessible parking, walkways and restrooms don't mean the whole farmhouse is wheelchair accessible. Visitors can access parts of the main floor, but not the parlor, living room, foyer or upstairs. Docents can explain rooms with restricted access. Contact staff about your group's needs before booking an education visit. Source: museum accessibility details.
Music, Farm Programs and Holiday Traditions
Summer: The chamber's annual Summertime Bluesfest takes place in June at Oak Grove Park. The farm also offers recurring Children's Garden Day learning activities. Sources: chamber festival program and garden programs.
Fall: Gladfest is the community's annual festival, while the farm hosts Big Shoal Country Fair. Holiday season: The farm's Holiday Nights brings music, crafts and a decorated historic setting. Check the program for costs and reservations; free general museum admission doesn't cover every special event. Sources: chamber events, country fair tradition and farm's seasonal calendar.
For spring visits, use the museum's exhibit and program calendar to choose an opening rather than assuming every activity returns on a fixed date.
